The school was established to prepare girls for college with domestic skills. Boys could also attend the school up to age 12. It employed the Montessori method of education, a method of education that is based on self-directed activity, hands-on learning and collaborative play.
Elizabeth Adams Armour taught English and Music at the Ambler Homestead School. She was educated at the University of London. She was also an accomplished musician with two degrees from London: Associate of the London College of Music (ALCM) and Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music (LRAM).
Frau Dr. Margarete Fuchs taught Languages and Domestic Science. She was educated in Berlin where she was a pupil of Professor Erich Schmidt. Frau Maragarete taught in England for five years until moving to America in 1911 to continue teaching in Boston and New York.
